Takhat Sri Damdama Sahib

Takht Sri Damdama Sahib is one of the five Takhts or the five holiest seats of authority for Sikhs. It is located in the village of Talwandi Sabo in the state of Punjab, India. The history of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib goes back to the times of the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. In 1705, Guru Gobind Singh arrived at Talwandi Sabo after the battle of Chamkaur Sahib. He stayed at Talwandi Sabo for nine months and during this time, he worked on completing the writing of the Sikh holy book, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. This process was known as the Damdama Sahib Joti Jot. The site of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib is also significant because it was where the Guru had a confrontation with the then Mughal governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan. The Guru and his followers had sought refuge in the area after the battle of Chamkaur Sahib, but Wazir Khan sent his forces to attack them. In the ensuing battle, Guru Gobind Singh’s two younger sons, Sahibzada Fateh Singh and Sahibzada Zorawar Singh, were killed. After Guru Gobind Singh’s departure from Talwandi Sabo, the site became an important center of Sikh learning and education. Several prominent Sikh scholars and leaders visited the site and contributed to the Sikh literary tradition. The place where Guru Gobind Singh completed the Sri Guru Granth Sahib is now known as the Damdama Sahib Takht. Today, Takht Sri Damdama Sahib is a major pilgrimage site for Sikhs and is visited by thousands of devotees from around the world every year. It is also an important center of Sikh learning and education, with several institutions dedicated to the study of Sikhism and the teachings of the Guru Granth Sahib located in the area.
