Gurudwara Banda Ghat Sahib is a historic and highly revered Sikh shrine located on the banks of the sacred Godavari River in Nanded, Maharashtra. This holy place is closely associated with the life of the great Sikh warrior Banda Singh Bahadur. It was here that Madho Das Bairagi experienced a complete spiritual transformation and became the fearless Sikh leader Banda Singh Bahadur.

Lachman Das was born in 1670 in Rajouri, a small town in the Poonch region of Kashmir. During his youth, he was known as a skilled hunter. However, one tragic incident changed his life forever. After accidentally killing a pregnant deer and witnessing the painful death of her unborn fawns, his heart was deeply moved. Filled with sorrow and detachment from worldly life, he left his home in search of spiritual peace. Over time, he came under the influence of several saints and yogis and became known as Madho Das Bairagi. Eventually, he settled at Nanded where he established a small dera near the Godavari River.

In 1708, Guru Gobind Singh arrived at this place. Madho Das attempted to display his mystical powers before Guru Sahib but failed completely. Realizing the divine greatness of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, he fell at the Guru’s feet and asked for forgiveness. Guru Sahib blessed him, initiated him into the Khalsa through Amrit and gave him the name Gurbaksh Singh. Later, he became famous as Banda Singh Bahadur.

As Banda Singh Bahadur learned about the martyrdoms of the Sikh Gurus, the sacrifices of the Sahibzadas and the atrocities committed against the Sikhs, his spirit was filled with courage and determination. Guru Gobind Singh Ji entrusted him with five arrows, a Nishan Sahib, a Nagara and a group of devoted Singhs and sent him to Punjab to fight against oppression. Banda Singh Bahadur successfully defeated several Mughal strongholds including Samana, Sadhaura and Sirhind. He established Khalsa rule in Punjab and issued coins in the name of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Gobind Singh Ji, marking the rise of Sikh sovereignty.

Today, Gurudwara Banda Ghat Sahib stands as a symbol of bravery, faith and sacrifice. Devotees who visit this sacred place are reminded of the heroic legacy of Banda Singh Bahadur and his unwavering devotion to the Sikh faith.
