Gurudwara Nanak Jhira Sahib

During his second missionary journey to South India, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru of the Sikhs, visited the ancient Hindu temple of Omkareshwar on the banks of the Narmada River. Continuing his travels, he passed through Nagpur and Khandwa before reaching Nanded. From there, he proceeded towards Hyderabad and Golconda, where he met several Muslim saints. His journey then brought him to Bidar, where he met Jalaluddin and Yakub Ali.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji, accompanied by Bhai Mardana, chose to stay on the outskirts of Bidar, at the very place where Nanak Jhira Gurudwara stands today. Nearby, a community of Muslim fakirs eagerly gathered to receive his divine wisdom. As news of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s presence spread across Bidar and the surrounding regions, saints and devotees from distant places traveled to seek his blessings.

At that time, Bidar was plagued by an acute shortage of drinking water. Despite numerous attempts, the wells dug by the people yielded only saline, undrinkable water. Witnessing their suffering, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was moved by compassion. With the divine name on his lips and kindness in his heart, he touched the hill with his foot and removed a stone from the spot. To everyone’s amazement, a clear, cool stream of fresh water began to flow. This miraculous spring soon became known as Nanak Jhira.

A magnificent Gurudwara was later built at the site, near the holy spring. The water from the stream is now collected in a beautifully crafted Amrit Kund made of white marble. The Gurudwara also houses a Guru Ka Langar, where devotees and travelers are served free meals around the clock, following the tradition of selfless service established by Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

By Train: Bidar Railway Station connects the city to major destinations. Once you arrive, hire a taxi or take a local auto-rickshaw. The Gurudwara is just 3-4 km away, and the ride takes about 10-15 minutes.

By Bus: Bidar has good road connectivity with major cities in Karnataka and nearby states. Buses frequently run to Bidar, and after arriving, you can take an auto-rickshaw or cycle rickshaw to reach the Gurudwara.
