Nestled within the corridor of Shah Shams Sabzwari’s tomb on Shah Shams Road in Multan, lies the historically significant Gurudwara Thara Sahib. This revered spot marks the sacred ground where Jagat Guru Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji once stayed during his visit to Multan. As you cross Daulat Gate Chowk, the towering beauty of Shah Shams Ji’s tomb becomes visible and it is within its peaceful embrace that this monument to Sikh heritage can be found. It was here that a profound exchange took place: Shah Rukne Alam, signifying Multan’s spiritual saturation, sent Guru Nanak a glass of milk filled to the brim. In a sublime act of wisdom, Guru Nanak returned the glass with a flower petal delicately placed on top, conveying his message of harmonious coexistence and boundless accommodation.

Beyond this iconic interaction, Guru Nanak engaged in insightful discussions with various mystics and learned personalities of the region at this very spot. While there isn’t a standalone Gurdwara building today, the Thara Sahib within the Mazar’s corridor stands as a poignant reminder of the Guru’s presence. During the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Prakash (the reading of Guru Granth Sahib) was regularly performed here, though this practice was unfortunately discontinued in 1850 AD under British rule. Despite the changes over time, this corridor continues to exist as a powerful monument, forever commemorating the arrival and spiritual legacy of Jagat Guru Ji in the ancient city of Multan.
