Gurudwara Pakki Sangat- Prayagraj
Gurudwara Pakki Sangat (Tap Asthan) in Allahabad marks a significant site where Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji stayed during his visit to the city. After traveling from Agra, Guru Tegh Bahadur arrived in Prayagraj and dedicated himself to prayer, meditation and acts of charity. The Guru’s time here was marked by immense humanitarian work, which deeply resonated with his followers.
A joyful and divine event occurred during this visit that thrilled the devotees. It was here in Prayagraj that Mata Gujri, the divine mother, conceived the son of God. Guru Gobind Singh Ji later described this event in his autobiography, Apnikatha, which forms part of his historical epic Bachittar Natak. Guru Gobind Singh Ji also reveals that in a previous life, he performed severe penance in the Himalayas near Hemkunt Sahib, blending his soul with the supreme spirit. God commanded him to take human form, leading to his birth during the dark age of Kaliyug. This is why both Allahabad and Hemkunt Sahib are considered sacred pilgrimage sites for Sikhs.
The exact location where Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji stayed is now home to Gurudwara Tap Asthan (Pakki Sangat). The gurudwara stands near the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, in the area known as Triveni Sangam—a place of immense spiritual significance in Hinduism, believed to be the meeting point of three rivers, including the invisible Sarasvati River.
The gurudwara was reconstructed in 1965 by Mahant Pritam Singh, standing about four feet above street level. Its flat-roofed, rectangular congregation hall is situated at the far end of a spacious square compound, accessed through a double-storey gateway. The Guru Granth Sahib is seated on a white marble canopied throne in the main sanctum. Adjacent to the congregation hall is a room that marks the Guru’s bedroom during his stay here. Additionally, two double-storey blocks on either side of the courtyard provide residential space for staff and visitors.
