Gurudwara Sahib Patshahi Pehli Nanksar, Thakkarwal
Gurudwara Sahib Patshahi Pehli Nanksar, Thakkarwal, is a revered historical Sikh shrine situated in village Thakkarwal on Pakhowal Road, on the outskirts of Ludhiana city. The sacred site marks the visit of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji during His first Udasi, when He traveled across the region spreading the message of truth, humility and devotion to the One Supreme Creator.
According to Sikh tradition, Guru Nanak Dev arrived at Thakkarwal after visiting Gurdwara Gau Ghat. At the time, the area was associated with Mahant Thakur Das, a learned scholar originally from Rajasthan who studied in Kashi and later served under Mahant Mathura Das. After the death of his mentor, Thakur Das wished to succeed him, but other Mahants chose another successor. This disagreement regarding succession led him to leave with his followers and settle at this location in Punjab. Over time, the settlement became known as Thakkarwal after his name.
When Guru Nanak Dev Ji arrived there, Thakur Das, who lived near a water reservoir was standing near a small well. At its entrance stood banyan trees, to which elephants were tied. Two of these elephants were particularly fierce and would not allow anyone to pass. Due to his pride in his knowledge and achievements, he chose not to welcome Guru Ji and instead went inside. Understanding the state of his mind, Guru Ji sat nearby and asked Bhai Mardana Ji to play the rabab, and then recited a shabad in Raag Gauri beginning with “Brahmai Garab Kiaa Nahi Jaaniaa,” teaching the danger of ego and the value of true wisdom.
The powerful message of Gurbani deeply affected Thakur Das. He came before Guru Nanak Dev Ji to engage in a spiritual discussion. When he greeted Guru Ji with “Hare Ram,” Guru Ji responded with “Sat Kartar.” Upon asking the meaning of this response, Thakur Das was taught that while incarnations such as Ram and Krishna were revered, the Eternal Creator, Sat Kartar, existed before all and remains forever true. Guru Ji’s explanation removed the veil of pride from Thakur Das’s heart and he humbly bowed before the Guru, seeking forgiveness for his ego and ignorance.
The Gurudwara today commemorates this historic event and preserves the memory of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s teachings on humility, self-realization and devotion to God. Thousands of devotees visit the shrine to pay their respects and seek spiritual inspiration from the timeless message that true wisdom is attained not through pride in knowledge but through surrender to the Divine Will.
