Gurudwara Mattan Sahib

When Guru Nanak started his third udasi (missionary tour, lit. travel) he visited Mansarovar, Tibet, China, Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir.Guru Nanak visited Srinagar, Anantnag and reached Mattan in the interior of the valley.At Mattan, Guru Nanak had a discussion with Sanskrit scholar Pandit Brahm Das, who was proud of his knowledge. Guru Nanak on seeing him coming with his huge stock of books, recited the couplet:
Pandit Brahm Das was shaken and fell at the feet of the Guru. Guru Sahib stayed for few days at Pandit Brahm Das’s residence. A Muslim Saint also discussed religious aspect with Guru Sahib.

Mattan was famous for its old ruins. Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa constructed Seven Gurdwara Sahib’s on the twin side of Springs, in which Sri Guru Granth Sahib were installed. These Gurdwara Sahib were removed by the Dogra traitors during 1905-1909.

Gurudwara Mattan Sahib continues to be a place of worship and pilgrimage for Sikhs and followers of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It serves as a reminder of the Guru’s teachings and his message of unity, equality, and selfless service. The gurudwara attracts devotees from all over the country and even from abroad, who come to pay their respects and seek blessing

How To Reach

To reach Gurudwara Mattan Sahib, you have several modes of transportation to consider. Here are the options you can choose from:

By Air: Fly to Srinagar International Airport: Book a flight to Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, which is the nearest major airport. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or use a pre-booked car service to travel to Gurudwara Mattan Sahib. The distance from Srinagar to Mattan is approximately 30 kilometers, and it takes around 1 hour to reach by road.

By Train: The nearest railway station to Gurudwara Mattan Sahib is the Jammu Tawi Railway Station. From Jammu Tawi, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Srinagar, which is about 250 kilometers away from Jammu. The journey takes around 5-6 hours. Once you reach Srinagar, you can follow the road route mentioned earlier to reach Gurudwara Mattan Sahib.

By Road: If you are traveling within Jammu and Kashmir or from nearby states, you can reach Srinagar by road. From Srinagar, you can take the Srinagar-Mattan Road via Awantipora and Pampore to reach Gurudwara Mattan Sahib. The approximate travel time from Srinagar to Gurudwara Mattan Sahib by road is around 1 hour, depending on traffic conditions.
