Gurudwara Dehra Sahib Guru Arjan Dev Ji
Gurudwara Dehra Sahib Guru Arjan Dev Ji, located opposite the Royal Mosque (Shahi Masjid) in Lahore, Pakistan, marks the spot where Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru, achieved martyrdom on 30th May, 1606. After enduring severe torture, Guru Arjan was allowed by his guards to bathe in the River Ravi to soothe his burns, where he merged with the eternal light.
In 1619, his son, Guru Hargobind, visited the site and built a memorial to honor his father’s sacrifice. Maharaja Ranjit Singh later constructed a small but beautiful Gurdwara at this location. In 1909, a congregational hall was added, and additional facilities, including a sarai (guest rooms), marble gate, and Nishan Sahib, were established.
In 1925, the local committee took over the management of the Gurdwara, but by 1927, the SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) took charge, starting reconstruction in 1930. The Gurdwara’s work was completed in 1934, including the gilding of its domes.
Following partition in 1947, despite the Gurdwara’s unfinished expansion, it continued to attract devotees. Today, daily recitations of Sri Guru Granth Sahib are held at Gurdwara Dehra Sahib. On the anniversary of Guru Arjan Dev Ji’s martyrdom (Shahidi Jor Mela), Sikh devotees visit to pay homage.
