Gurudwara Bhatha Sahib

Gurudwara Bhatha Sahib is a revered historical site located in Kotla Nihang village on the Ropar-Chandigarh Road, just 3 km from Ropar Railway Station and 40 km from Anandpur Sahib. It is situated along the main highway connecting Chandigarh to Kullu and Kangra valleys, making it easily accessible.

This Gurudwara commemorates the visit of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. According to historical accounts, as Guru Ji traveled through this region, he sought shelter near a brick kiln (Bhatha). Unaware of Guru Ji’s identity, the laborers pointed towards the burning kiln in jest. As soon as Guru Ji’s horse set foot on the kiln, the scorching heat miraculously cooled down. Witnessing this divine event, Chaudhary Nihang Khan, the local Pathan chief and a devoted follower of the Guru, immediately arrived at the site. Overwhelmed with reverence, he welcomed Guru Ji into his fort and extended hospitality to him and his followers, despite the personal risk involved.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji visited Bhatha Sahib a total of four times. His first visit was in 1745 B.K., when he passed through this site on his way back to Anandpur Sahib after winning the Battle of Bhangani. The second visit occurred in 1752 B.K., when he attended the engagement ceremony of Alam Khan, the son of Nihang Khan. The third visit took place in 1759 B.K., when Guru Ji was returning from Kurukshetra. The fourth and final visit happened in 1761 B.K., when he came to Bhatha Sahib after leaving Anandpur Sahib forever.

The Gurudwara stands near the left bank of the Sutlej River, where the remains of an ancient Harappan civilization were discovered by the Archaeological Survey of India. A nearby tourist bungalow serves as a popular stop for travelers en route to Bhakra Nangal, Kullu Valley and Anandpur Sahib.

Several important religious events and gatherings are held at Gurudwara Bhatha Sahib. The Prakash Purabs of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, and Guru Gobind Singh Ji are celebrated with great devotion. Every month, Sangrand with Amrit Sanchar is observed. Additionally, a Jor Mela is held from 1st Poh to 4th Poh, and the anniversary of Baba Jiwan Singh Ji is commemorated on 11th Poh.

Gurudwara Bhatha Sahib stands as a symbol of faith, history and divine intervention, attracting devotees from all over the world.
