Gurudwara Bhai Manjh Ji

Bhai Manjh Ji’s original name was Teertha and he was a respected leader of the Manjha community. According to Bhai Santokh Singh Ji, his village was Manjhki in Doaba. However, most historians such as Principal Satbir Singh and Kahn Singh Nabha state that his village was Kanghmai.

Bhai Manjh Ji had heard a great deal about Guru Arjan Dev Ji and decided to meet him. Upon meeting Guru Ji, he became a devoted Sikh with complete faith and dedication. His daily seva (selfless service) was to collect firewood for the preparation of Guru Ka Langar.

One day, while gathering firewood, Bhai Manjh Ji accidentally fell into a well. Even in that difficult situation, he did not allow the firewood to fall into the water. Instead, he kept it balanced on his head and continued reciting the Naam. Guru Arjan Dev Ji, through his divine insight, became aware of the incident and immediately reached the spot along with other Sikhs.

As Bhai Manjh Ji was being pulled out of the well, he humbly requested that the firewood meant for Guru Ji’s Langar be taken out first, and only then should he be rescued. Witnessing such deep devotion and selfless service, Guru Ji was greatly pleased and uttered these immortal words:

“Manjh pyara Guru ko, Gur Manjh pyara.
Manjh Guru ka bohitha, jag langhanhaara.”

Through this blessing, Bhai Manjh Ji became a lasting symbol of seva (selfless service) and unwavering faith in Sikh history.
