Gurdwara Sri Likhansar Sahib, located in the Bathinda district of Talwandi Sabo, holds great historical significance. The gurdwara has undergone expansions and now features a square hall with a domed sanctum. Situated at the southeastern corner of the sarovar (holy pond), it derives its name from the combination of “Likhan” meaning writing and “Sar” meaning sarovar, symbolizing “The Pool of Writing.” During the time of Guru Gobind Singh, Bhai Mani Singh and Baba Deep Singh played pivotal roles in creating four copies of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in Talwandi Sabo (Damdama Sahib). As mentioned in the Sakhi Pothi and Gurbilas Patshahi 10 by Bhai Koer Singh, Guru Gobind Singh would have reed pens made for the writers and then throw them into the pool situated here. Bhai Mani Singh Ji, under Guru Gobind Singh’s guidance, used a kalam (reed pen) to transcribe the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Afterward, Guru Sahib discarded all the ink and reed pens into the sarovar of the gurdwara, bestowing a blessing that anyone who writes the thirty-five words of Gurmukhi here will be blessed with a sharp mind. Chaudhary Dal Singh, the local chief of Talwandi Sabo, who had converted to Sikhism earlier, sought an explanation for the disposal of thousands of pens. Guru Gobind Singh responded by stating, “Thousands of Sikhs will study the holy texts in this place, and then pens will come into use. This is our Kashi (seat of learning); those who study here will cast off their ignorance and rise to be authors, poets, and commentators.” Gurdwara Sri Likhansar Sahib served as a place where Sikhs would write the Punjabi alphabet (Painti Gurmukhi). Previously, there was a sandpit within the gurdwara where mothers would guide their young children to write their first letter. However, now the gurdwara appears to be adorned with marble throughout.
