Gurudwara Nanak Piao, located on Rana Pratap Road (Grand Trunk Road) in North Delhi, is a revered historical shrine dedicated to Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru. The Gurudwara stands at the very site where Guru Nanak camped in 1505 during the reign of Sultan Sikandar Lodi. Surrounded by a garden, the place soon became a spiritual refuge for the people of Delhi.

During his stay, people flocked to meet the revered Guru and often brought precious gifts and offerings. However, Guru Nanak Dev Ji distributed everything he received among the poor and needy. He also served food and water to all who came to him, and this compassionate act gave the shrine its name. The word “Piao” means “to offer water to drink,” and even today, the historic well from which Guru Ji served water is preserved at the site.

Over time, Gurudwara Nanak Piao gained recognition as a sacred place of peace, service, and spiritual guidance. Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s sermons of brotherhood, non-violence, and harmony deeply touched the people, inspiring both Hindus and Muslims to bow before him with reverence. The garden surrounding the Gurudwara soon became a pilgrimage site where countless seekers found solace and spiritual deliverance.

A well-known story from this period adds to the shrine’s significance. It is said that during Guru Nanak’s stay, a rumor spread that by God’s grace he had revived a dead elephant. When Sultan Sikandar Lodi heard of this, he requested the Guru to bring one of his royal elephants back to life. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, however, refused, as such miracles were not the purpose of his mission. Angered, the Sultan had him imprisoned.

Even in prison, Guru Nanak’s compassion and spiritual radiance influenced everyone around him. He consoled prisoners, uplifted them with his words, and deeply moved the prison officials. They soon informed the Emperor that Guru Nanak was no idolater but a saint respected by both Hindus and Muslims alike.

Thus, Gurudwara Nanak Piao stands today not only as a reminder of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s stay in Delhi but also as a living symbol of his message of humility, equality and service to humanity.

By Metro: The nearest metro station is Model Town (Yellow Line), about 1.5 km from the Gurudwara. From there, one can take an auto-rickshaw or a short taxi ride.
By Bus: Several DTC and private buses run on the Grand Trunk Road and stop close to the Gurudwara. Local e-rickshaws and autos are also available for the last stretch.
By Train: The nearest railway station is Delhi Kishanganj (about 4 km away). Delhi Junction (Old Delhi Railway Station) is also close, around 6 km from the Gurudwara. From either station, taxis and autos are easily available.
By Air: The nearest airport is Indira Gandhi International Airport (around 22 km away). One can hire a taxi or take the metro from the airport to reach the Gurudwara conveniently.
