Gurudwara Mata Sundri Ji

Gurudwara Mata Sundri Ji is a prominent historical shrine located on Mata Sundri Road in the heart of Delhi, behind JP Nayak Hospital. It is dedicated to Mata Sundri Ji, the revered wife of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru. This Gurudwara stands at the site where Mata Sundri Ji lived for many years and provided spiritual and administrative guidance to the Sikh community following Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s departure for the Deccan.

After Guru Gobind Singh Ji left for the South, Mata Sundri Ji and Mata Sahib Kaur Ji arrived in Delhi as per his instructions. Initially, they stayed at Bhai Jawahar Singh Ji’s haveli near Turkman Gate. Later, a new haveli was constructed for Mata Ji, where she resided with an adopted son who resembled her martyred son Sahibzada Ajit Singh Ji. Despite the immense personal loss, Mata Sundri Ji continued to lead the Khalsa with wisdom and compassion. Her guidance was deeply respected, and Sikh leaders would seek her counsel on critical matters.

It was from this very location that Mata Ji appointed Bhai Mani Singh Ji as the Head Granthi of Sri Darbar Sahib, Amritsar. Under her spiritual leadership, the internal divisions between the Bandai Khalsa and the Tat Khalsa were peacefully resolved during the Baisakhi of 1721, reinforcing unity in the Panth.

Born as Sundari Kaur, she was the daughter of Bhai Ram Saran, a Kumarav Khatri from Bijwara in present-day Hoshiarpur, Punjab. According to tradition, she married Guru Gobind Singh Ji on 4 April 1684 in Anandpur. She gave birth to Sahibzada Ajit Singh on 26 January 1687 at Paonta Sahib. Her life was marked by immense courage and dedication to Sikh values.

Mata Sundri Ji passed away in 1747. While her last rites were performed at the site now marked by Gurudwara Bala Sahib, this Gurudwara remains the place where she lived and served the Khalsa Panth with unparalleled devotion. The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee later built this sacred memorial to honor her enduring contribution to Sikh history.
