Khalsa Diwan Sikh Temple
Khalsa Diwan Sikh Temple is a prominent Gurudwara located in the Wan Chai district of Hong Kong, at the junction of Queen’s Road East and Stubbs Road on Hong Kong Island. It serves as a central place of worship and community gathering for Sikhs living in Hong Kong. After undergoing an extensive five-year renovation, the Gurudwara was beautifully restored and officially re-opened on 8 September 2022 by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu.
History
Established in 1901 by the local Sikh community, including soldiers of the British Army, the Gurudwara was built to provide spiritual guidance, social support and a sense of unity among Sikhs in Hong Kong. Over the years, it has played a vital role in preserving Sikh traditions and serving the needs of the community.
In 1914, the Gurudwara became a significant stop for Sikh migrants traveling to Canada during the time of the Komagata Maru incident. Many stayed here, offering prayers before continuing their journey, making the site deeply connected to this historic event.
As the Sikh population in Hong Kong grew during the 1930s, the Gurudwara was expanded and rebuilt to accommodate the increasing number of devotees. However, during World War II, the building suffered severe damage after being bombed twice, tragically resulting in the death of the Granthi, Bhai Nand Singh.
Following the war, the Gurudwara was restored through the collective efforts of the Sikh community, with support from Sindhi Hindus who had migrated to Hong Kong after the Partition of India. Further expansions were carried out in the 1980s, including the addition of a covered bridge connecting the Gurudwara to Queen’s Road East, making access easier for visitors.
Today, Khalsa Diwan Sikh Temple stands as a symbol of resilience, faith and unity, continuing to serve both the spiritual and community needs of Sikhs in Hong Kong.
