Gurudwara Shaheed Ganj Sahib

Gurudwara Shaheed Ganj Sahib, Morinda stands as a solemn memorial to the bravery and sacrifice of the Khalsa warriors who laid down their lives avenging the betrayal and martyrdom of Mata Gujri Ji and the younger Sahibzadas, Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji.

After Mata Gujri Ji and the Sahibzadas were imprisoned without food or water at the site of Gurdwara Kotwali Sahib in Morinda, they were taken to Sirhind, where they attained martyrdom. On the way, they had briefly paused at a well within the present Gurdwara premises to drink water, thus sanctifying the spot.

In 1762 Bikrami, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, upon hearing the news of their martyrdom while at Raikot, foretold the complete annihilation of the traitors Jani Khan and Mani Khan of Morinda. Many years later, in 1818 Bikrami, the Dal Khalsa arrived in Morinda after the Wadda Ghallughara. Among them were devoted Singhs from the nearby village of Gharuan, including Ran Singh and Diya Singh, who urged Sardar Jassa Singh Ahluwalia to punish the Ranghar brothers responsible for handing over the Sahibzadas to the Mughals.

While some Singhs went to fetch water from the sacred well, they were mocked and taunted by the Ranghars from the rooftops. As the Singhs protested against the insults, the Ranghars opened fire, and one Singh was killed on the spot. This incident sparked immediate outrage, and the Dal Khalsa launched a full-scale attack on Morinda. A fierce battle followed, during which many brave Singhs attained martyrdom.

The remaining Ranghars, including Jani Khan and Mani Khan, took refuge in the fort of Morinda. Under the leadership of Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, the Khalsa forces stormed the fort. Ran Singh and Diya Singh from Gharuan captured the traitors and executed them, fulfilling Guru Sahib’s prophecy by eradicating their entire lineage.

Gurudwara Shaheed Ganj Sahib now stands in sacred remembrance of those courageous martyrs. It remains a powerful symbol of sacrifice, justice, and the spirit of the Khalsa.
