Gurudwara Shaheed Ganj Sahib in Muktsar is a deeply revered historical site that commemorates the supreme sacrifice of the Chali Muktas, the Forty Liberated Ones. Muktsar, once known as Khidrana Ki Dhab, derives its present name from these brave Sikhs who gave their lives fighting the Mughal forces of Wazir Khan of Sirhind. This decisive battle, fought on December 29, 1705, marked the final military engagement of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

After the battle, Guru Gobind Singh Ji personally cremated the martyrs. Among them was Mahan Singh, who lay severely wounded. When he saw the Guru approaching, he mustered his remaining strength to rise. Guru Sahib embraced him with compassion. With tears in his eyes, Mahan Singh requested that the Guru tear up the Bedhahwa, the document earlier signed by some Sikhs disowning the Guru’s leadership during their escape from Anandpur Sahib. Guru Gobind Singh Ji lovingly destroyed the document, restoring their spiritual bond and showing boundless grace towards his followers.

The site where the final rites of the Chali Muktas were performed later became Gurudwara Shaheed Ganj Sahib, also known as Angitha Sahib. The Gurudwara stands beautifully beside a serene water tank, with its interior walls adorned with artwork depicting the lives and teachings of the Sikh Gurus. It is a place of deep devotion, reflecting both sacrifice and spiritual renewal.

Every year, millions of devotees visit this sacred shrine, especially during the Magh Mela held on the 12th and 13th of January. The first day of the month of Magha, according to the Indian calendar, attracts large gatherings who come to honour the martyrs and reflect on the legacy of courage left behind by the Chali Muktas.

Muktsar is also home to three other historically significant Gurudwaras closely linked to this event: Gurudwara Tibbi Sahib, Gurudwara Tambu Sahib and Gurudwara Darbar Sahib. Together, they form an important pilgrimage circuit for devotees seeking to connect with Sikh history and heritage.
