Gurudwara Sahib Bibi Sharan Kaur Ji Raipur
Bibi Sharan Kaur, a brave and selfless Sikh martyr who made the ultimate sacrifice in 1705. She was from the village of Raipur Rani, just 2 km from the revered town of Chamkaur. After the fierce Battle of Chamkaur, where Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s two elder sons, Sahibzada Ajit Singh and Sahibzada Jujhar Singh, gave their lives for the Sikh cause, Bibi Sharan Kaur was asked by Guru Gobind Singh Ji to perform the last rites of the fallen warriors.
With unwavering courage, she went to cremate the bodies of the two Sahibzadas and other valiant Sikhs, including her own husband, Bhai Pritam Singh, who had fought bravely within the walls of Chamkaur Fort.
As soon as the funeral pyre was lit, the soldiers discovered them. They wanted the bodies of the martyrs according to their war tradition—to rot in open air, intending to strike fear into the hearts of the non-Muslim population who refused to apostasize or reveal Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s whereabouts.
In the face of this cruelty, Bibi Sharan Kaur is believed to have died while bravely resisting, but some people say, when some Mughal soldiers intended to violate her honor, she jumped into the funeral pyre, joining her beloved warriors in martyrdom to protect her dignity from those who sought to dishonor her.
Her selfless act and devotion have become a symbol of courage, love and unshakable faith. In 1945, a Gurudwara was built in her honor in Raipur, a place that now stands as a reminder of her sacrifice and the undying spirit of the Sikh martyrs.
Bibi Sharan Kaur’s legacy lives on not just in the village of Raipur, but in the hearts of all those who cherish the values of selflessness, bravery and devotion to the Guru and the Khalsa.
