Gurudwara Reetha Sahib

Gurudwara Reetha Sahib is situated in the Champawat district of Uttarakhand, which holds great significance in Sikhism. The Gurudwara was constructed in the 1960s near the village of Deyuri. It marks the site where Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited along with Bhai Mardana Ji during their travels. While resting under a reetha (soapnut) tree, Guru Nanak Dev Ji instructed Bhai Mardana to eat the reetha, which is normally bitter in taste. To everyone’s astonishment, the reetha Guru Ji plucked was sweet. The surrounding jogis, who had been sitting under nearby reetha trees, noticed that all the reethas on Guru Nanak’s side had become sweet as well. Today, the same reetha trees stand in the Gurudwara and the sweet reethas are still distributed as prashad to visitors.

The Gurudwara’s name, “Meetha Reetha Sahib,” reflects this miracle. This sacred place also houses a temple dedicated to Devnath. On Baisakhi Purnima, a major Sikh fair is held at the Gurudwara, attracting thousands of devotees. The first caretaker of the Gurudwara was Lala Baisakhi Ram from Haldwani.
