Gurudwara Nangali Sahib

Gurudwara Nangali Sahib, nestled amidst scenic hills on the bank of the Drungali Nallah, is one of the oldest and most revered Sikh shrines in Northern India. Located about 4 km from Poonch town in Jammu and Kashmir, it has long been a spiritual center for devotees from across the country. The Gurudwara complex today includes the main prayer hall, a Langar Hall and nearly 70 residential rooms for visiting pilgrims.

The shrine was founded in 1803 AD by Thakur Bhai Mela Singh Ji, the fourth successor of Sant Bhai Feru Singh Ji. In 1814, Maharaja Ranjit Singh visited the Gurudwara and was deeply impressed by its sanctity. As a gesture of reverence, he attached an estate to the shrine and later, in 1823, granted four villages for its upkeep.

Tragedy struck in 1947 when the original structure was set ablaze by tribesmen supported from across the border. However, with the resilience and devotion of the local sangat, the Gurudwara was rebuilt under the guidance of Mahant Bachitar Singh Ji. Since then, it has continued to flourish as a beacon of Sikh faith in Jammu and Kashmir.

Gurudwara Nangali Sahib offers round-the-clock Langar (community kitchen) and free accommodation facilities for all visitors, regardless of religion, caste or creed. Daily prayers are held, with a large congregation (Diwan) every Sunday that draws devotees from nearby towns and villages. The shrine is particularly vibrant during the annual Baisakhi celebrations, when thousands of devotees from across the country and abroad gather to mark the birth of the Khalsa with kirtan, prayers and community service.

Blessed with serene surroundings, a cool climate and a spiritually uplifting atmosphere, Gurudwara Nangali Sahib provides not only peace and solace to the soul but also a profound sense of belonging to Sikh heritage and tradition.
