Gurudwara Kotha Sahib
Gurudwara Sri Kotha Sahib is situated in the village of Vallah near Amritsar. This sacred site commemorates the place where Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji stayed for seventeen days in the humble mud house of a devoted Sikh woman named Mai Haro.
Guru Ji had come to visit Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, but the masands, driven by pride and greed, closed the doors against him. Guru Ji sat outside for a while and then departed, remarking that the masands of Amritsar had been consumed by the fire of ambition. He then proceeded to Vallah, where he rested under a pipal tree on the outskirts of the village.
There, a devout lady of the village, Mai Haro Ji, humbly served Guru Ji, who graciously accepted her request to stay at her home. When the sangat of Amritsar learned of the masands’ behavior, a group of women came to Valla to seek forgiveness. Guru Ji blessed them, saying, “Maiyaan Rabb Rajaian” — meaning “Upon women may rest God’s favor.”
Later, the sangat requested Guru Ji to return to Amritsar and take charge of Sri Harmandir Sahib, but he refused, explaining that religion should never be turned into a business.
The present Gurudwara building was reconstructed after being damaged by the earthquake of 1905. It consists of a hall with a square sanctum at the center, topped by a domed room. On the right are residential quarters, and at the back is Guru Ka Langar.
The Gurudwara stands on about three and a half acres of land and is managed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Every year, a large fair is held here on the full moon day of the month of Magh (mid-January to mid-February), attracting thousands of devotees. In the village of Valla, two historical Gurudwaras commemorate Guru Ji’s visit — Gurudwara Guriaana Sahib and Gurudwara Kotha Sahib.
