Gurudwara Janam Asthan, Sri Nankana Sahib

Gurudwara Janam Asthan, also known as Gurudwara Nankana Sahib, marks the sacred birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. Located in Nankana Sahib, Punjab, Pakistan—about 65 km from Lahore—the shrine stands on the historical site of Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, the village where Guru Nanak was born in 1469 to Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta. The town was later renamed in Guru Nanak’s honor.

This revered Gurudwara is the most prominent among the nine historical gurdwaras in the region, each commemorating different episodes from Guru Nanak’s early life. It draws thousands of Sikh pilgrims (yatris) from around the world, especially during key events like Guru Nanak Gurpurab.

By Train: Sri Nankana Sahib has its own railway station, Nankana Sahib Railway Station, which is connected to major cities like Lahore, Faisalabad and Karachi. From the station, the Gurudwara is just a short rickshaw or taxi ride away.

By Road: Nankana Sahib is well-connected by road. Buses and taxis are available from Lahore, Sheikhupura and Faisalabad. The drive from Lahore via the M-2 Motorway and Sheikhupura Road takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

By Air: The nearest international airport is Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore. It is located approximately 65 kilometers from Nankana Sahib. From the airport, you can easily reach the town. First, hire a taxi or use local transportation. Then, follow the main highway to Nankana Sahib. The journey is straightforward and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic.

For Pilgrims from India: Sikh yatris can visit during special occasions like Guru Nanak Gurpurab under the Pakistan-India pilgrimage agreement. Groups are usually facilitated by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC), with required visas and permits.
