Gurudwara Ghat Sahib – Nangal
Gurudwara Ghat Sahib – Nangal is a revered historical site associated with Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Located on the left bank of the Sutlej River near Nangal, this sacred Gurudwara marks the spot from where Guru Gobind Singh Ji crossed the river by boat to reach the village of Bibhor, where Gurudwara Bibhor Sahib now stands prominently on the opposite elevated bank.
According to Sikh history, Guru Gobind Singh Ji visited this place in 1753 Bikrami (1696 CE) while journeying from Paonta Sahib to Anandpur Sahib after the battles of Nadaun and Hussaini. At the time, a ferry point existed here. Upon hearing of Guru Ji’s arrival, numerous boatmen readied and decorated their boats in hopes of having the honor to serve him. Among them was a humble and devout boatman named Ruknuddin, also known as Saida Mallah. Due to his poverty, Saida could not decorate his boat and was ridiculed by the others.
When Guru Ji arrived, he inquired about the ownership of each boat. Finally, upon reaching Saida Mallah’s boat, he humbly folded his hands and said, “This boat belongs to you, my Lord.” Deeply moved by his humility and devotion, Guru Ji chose to cross the Sutlej in Saida’s modest boat. Afterward, Guru Ji offered him gold coins, but Saida respectfully declined, saying, “We both are boatmen — I help people cross rivers, while you ferry souls across the ocean of life. I helped you across; now bless me to cross the worldly ocean.” Pleased, Guru Ji blessed him, saying, “Saida, not only you but twenty-one generations of your lineage shall attain salvation.”
Gurudwara Ghat Sahib stands today in remembrance of this divine interaction, symbolizing the humility, faith and blessings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It remains a spiritually significant destination for devotees who come to reflect on Guru Ji’s teachings and the legacy of selfless service.
