Gurudwara Bibi Kaulaan Ji Sri Kaulsar Sahib
Gurudwara Bibi Kaulaan Ji Sri Kaulsar Sahib is located in the district of Amritsar, Punjab and is closely connected with significant chapters of Sikh history. This sacred place was built in memory of Mata Kaulaan Ji, who was the adopted daughter of the Qazi of Lahore. Mata Kaulaan Ji was a woman of deep spiritual character who rose above religious discrimination and embraced Sikhism as the foundation of her life. She stayed in the company of Sai Mian Mir and through him received the opportunity to have the holy darshan of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. Deeply inspired by the Guru’s teachings and personality, Mata Kaulaan Ji accepted the Sikh faith.
When the Qazi learned about her decision, he ordered that she be put to death. However, with the help of Sai Mian Mir Ji, she safely reached the protection of Guru Hargobind Sahib. The Guru granted her a place to live near Harmandir Sahib and Baba Atal Rai Sahib.
The sacred sarovar in front of the Gurudwara, known as Kaulsar Sahib, was excavated in 1624 and completed in 1627 under the supervision of Baba Buddha Ji. Guru Hargobind Sahib instructed the Sangat to take a holy dip in Kaulsar before bathing in the sarovar of Harmandir Sahib. This highlights the great importance of Kaulsar. Along with Ramsar, Santokhsar and Bibeksar, Kaulsar is one of the five sacred sarovars of Amritsar.
The samadhi of Mata Kaulaan Ji is also located here at the western end of Kaulsar Sahib. She dedicated her entire life to the service of the Guru’s house with devotion and faith and breathed her last at Kartarpur. In March 2004, during the kar seva of Kaulsar Sarovar, a modern filtration system was installed to help maintain its sanctity and cleanliness.
Gurudwara Bibi Kaulaan Ji Sri Kaulsar Sahib stands as a living tribute to a noble woman who sacrificed everything for spiritual truth and completed her spiritual journey in the light of Sikhism.
