Gurudwara Bhai Pheru, Distt Kasur
Gurudwara Bhai Pheru, located in the town of Bhai Phero, 60 kilometers from Lahore on the Lahore-Multan road, is a significant historical site that commemorates the devotion of Bhai Pheru, originally named Sangtia.
The story of Bhai Pheru begins when he was carrying oil skins full of ghee to Kartarpur. One of Guru Har Rai Ji’s Sikhs purchased the ghee and asked him to collect the payment the following day. When Sangtia returned the next day, he found his oil skins mysteriously full of ghee again. Witnessing this miracle, he sought out Guru Har Rai Ji, who welcomed him and gave him the name Bhai Pheru.
Bhai Pheru was appointed as the masand (spiritual leader) of the Nakka area. When an investigation revealed that many other masands were guilty of financial mismanagement, Bhai Pheru’s honesty and integrity were highlighted. His transparent and accurate account-keeping led Guru Har Rai Ji to ensure the continued provision of Langar (community kitchen) under his care. Bhai Pheru’s unwavering dedication earned him the title of “Sachchi Dahri“ (True Beard) from Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
After Bhai Pheru’s death in Nakka, a Samadh (shrine) was built at the site of his passing, and a town developed around it, which came to be known as Bhai Phero. The Gurudwara itself, initially built in honor of Bhai Pheru, was historically significant, with up to 2,750 acres of land once attached to it.
Unfortunately, the current condition of Gurudwara Bhai Pheru is in poor shape. It stands as an old Sikh temple in ruins, with roofs that have collapsed. The Gurudwara’s deteriorating state is a sad sight for visitors.
Despite its dilapidated condition, the Gurudwara remains a place of historical importance, symbolizing Bhai Pheru’s deep devotion and his enduring legacy in the Sikh community. The site, though in need of restoration, continues to attract visitors who seek to connect with its rich history and spiritual significance.
