Gurudwara Ber Sahib – Sultanpur Lodhi

Gurudwara Ber Sahib in Sultanpur Lodhi is one of the most sacred sites associated with Guru Nanak Dev Ji. During his stay in Sultanpur Lodhi, Guru Nanak Dev Ji would visit the nearby Bein stream every morning for bathing and meditation. It is believed that he used to sit and meditate beneath a Ber tree at this very place, and the tree still stands today as a symbol of that divine association. The shrine was later established by Baba Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, the founder of the Kapurthala State. The present marble and mosaic structure began construction in 1938 and was completed in 1942, reflecting both spiritual and architectural significance.

According to Sikh tradition, one day while bathing in the Bein, Guru Nanak Dev Ji experienced a divine revelation. He disappeared in the waters and returned after three days, proclaiming the message that there is no distinction between Hindus and Muslims and that all humanity is one. This event marked the beginning of his mission to spread the message of one God, equality and universal brotherhood.

The Qazi of the town was considered a learned man among the Muslims. He asked the Guru to join him in offering Namaz (prayer) in a mosque if he really did not believe in any distinction between Hindus and Muslims. Nanak accompanied the Qazi to the mosque. Everybody said his prayer. But Guru Nanak Dev, however, only stood watching. When questioned by Qazi as to why he did not join him in offerings Namaz the Guru replied that Qazi himself was worried about a new born colt all the time. He was afraid that it might fall into the well. He explained that true prayer requires complete concentration and devotion.

His words deeply impressed the people, who realized the spiritual depth of his teachings. Today, Sultanpur Lodhi remains a revered pilgrimage destination where devotees come to connect with the early teachings and divine message of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
