Gurdwara Hatt Sahib Sultanpur Lodhi Kapurthala Punjab

Gurudwara Hatt Sahib is a famous town in Sultanpur Lodhi district Kapurthala, Punjab. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, spent 14 years of his life here. Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s brother-in-law Mr. Jairam Ji had given Guru Nanak Dev Ji an employee with Nawab Daulat Khan Lodhi. Nawab Lodhi was greatly influenced by Guru ji’s religious conduct and discretion. He offered the post of Home Department to Guru Nanak Dev Ji but Guru Ji accepted to be in charge of the Food Department. Because he believes that by staying in this department he will be able to help the poor and the needy.
Guru Nanak Dev ji managed Modikhane (storehouse) with great discretion and honesty. The in-charge of Modikhane before Guru ji had become very rich himself by killing the rights of the poor by cheating and rigging. But Guru Nanak Dev ji always used to give goods to the customers after weighing them fully. Every person was happy with his work and all used to praise his work from the Nawab. At the place where Guru ji’s Modikhana was, a magnificent and beautiful Gurudwara has been built at the same place. It is called Gurdwara Hatt Sahib.
Along with Gurudwara Hatt Sahib, a lake has also been built. Those 11 stone weights are also kept here, with which Guru ji used to weigh food etc. An incident in Guru ji’s life is mentioned that when Guru Nanak Dev ji was weighing food and counting each weight as ‘one, two, three… ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen’. When he reached Terah (13) – ‘Tera’ (Tera meaning number 13 in Punjabi, and Tera meaning ‘Yours’, i.e. ‘belong to You, O Lord’), he went into meditation. Guru Nanak went on weighing saying, “Tera, tera, tera…” The customers were happy to have extra provisions and did not want to carry so much goods.
