Gurdwara Charan Kanwal Sahib
Gurdwara Charan Kanwal Sahib, Machhiwara, is a sacred site where Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru of Sikhism, rested after the historic battle of Chamkaur Sahib. After the martyrdom of his two sons and thirty-five Sikhs, Guru Ji left the fort of Chamkaur and instructed his Sikhs to meet him in the forests of Machhiwara, following the North Star. After the battle, he traveled through thorny bushes and desolate forests.
Guru Ji’s journey took him to Chuharpur village, where he rested under a Jhar (bough), now commemorated by Gurudwara Sri Jhar Sahib. From there, Guru Ji continued his journey, passing through the villages of Powat, Sehejo Majra and others.
Then, Guru Ji reached this place, where the first thing he did was drink water (Jal) from the well. After drinking, Guru Ji used a Tind (water-drawing pot) as a pillow and rested under a Jand tree.
While resting under the tree, he kept remembering God. Guru Ji recited a Shabad:
Khial Patshahi – 10th
Mittar Pyare Nu Haal Murida Da Kehna
Tudh Bin Rog Rajaia Da Odan, Naag Niwasa Da Rahna
Sool Surahi Khanjar Piyala, Bing Kasayia Da Sahna
Yarde Da Sanu Sathar Changa, Bhath Kheraya Da Rahna.
This is the place where Bhai Daya Singh, Bhai Dharam Singh and Bhai Maan Singh, who had become separated during their journey from Chamkaur Sahib, reunited with Guru Ji. It was early in the morning, So Guru Ji and the Singhs took a bath from the water of the well and began their Nitnem (daily prayers). Then Gulab Chand Masand, a respected brother of Guru Ghar, came to know about the arrival of Guru Ji, he brought Guru ji to his home (now Gurudwara Chubara Sahib) with great respect.
This Jand tree still stands today, located to the right side of the main hall, next to the Sarovar and the well from which Guru Ji drank water and took a bath is also still present.
