Gurudwara Kothri Sahib – Sultanpur Lodhi

When Guru Nanak Dev Ji was young, he secured a job in Sultanpur Lodhi under the recommendation of his brother-in-law, Jai Ram Ji, working under Nawab Daulat Khan Lodhi. He was appointed as a storekeeper in the state granary, where his duty was to weigh and distribute food supplies.

While performing his duties, whenever Guru Ji reached the count of 13 (Tera), he would become deeply absorbed in divine remembrance, repeatedly reciting “Tera Hi Tera”—meaning “Everything belongs to You, O Lord.” Immersed in devotion, he would generously distribute more than required, reflecting his belief in selfless service (Seva) and divine trust.

However, some envious officials, disturbed by Guru Ji’s generosity, accused him of misappropriating state resources. As a result, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was summoned to the house of Jadu Rai, the Accountant General, where his accounts were meticulously audited. Until the investigation concluded, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was kept under house arrest in a small room. Upon verification, it was discovered that not only were his records flawless, but the state actually owed him Rs. 760. Despite this, Guru Ji refused to accept the amount, instead requesting that it be distributed among the poor.

When the truth was revealed, Nawab Daulat Khan Lodhi deeply regretted his mistake and personally apologized for believing the false allegations. Acknowledging Guru Ji’s honesty and wisdom, the Nawab even offered him the Dewanship (Prime Ministership) of his state. However, Guru Nanak Dev Ji humbly declined, stating that his true purpose was to serve humanity and spread divine teachings.

The small room where Guru Nanak Dev Ji was kept under house arrest is now commemorated as Gurudwara Kothri Sahib, preserving this sacred site of history. Located 14 km from Kapurthala, this revered Gurudwara attracts devotees from far and wide, who come to pay homage to Guru Ji’s selfless service, unwavering dedication to truth, and divine wisdom. It serves as a timeless reminder of the values of justice, humility, and compassion that Guru Nanak Dev Ji embodied.
