Gurudwara Kandh Sahib – Batala
Gurudwara Sri Kandh Sahib is located in Batala, Punjab and is associated with the wedding of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib Ji. When Guru Nanak’s marriage was being arranged, his father-in-law, Mool Chand, insisted on following the traditional Brahmin rituals, leading to a discussion between the Brahmins and the Guru. The debate took place near an old, crooked mud wall (kandh), which had weakened due to recent rains. Some members of the bride’s family saw this as an opportunity to harm the Guru by hoping the wall would collapse on him.
An elderly woman, aware of the danger, approached Guru Nanak and warned him about the unstable wall. Smiling, the Guru reassured her, saying, “Mata Ji, ehh kand sadeeya layah nehee digdee…” meaning, “This wall will not fall for a long time. The will of God shall prevail.” True to his words, the wall remained intact and became an object of reverence for Sikhs.
Gurudwara Sri Kandh Sahib was built at the site where that crooked mud wall (kandh) stood, which had been sanctified by Guru Nanak’s presence. The original wall, now considered sacred, is symbolized by a neatly plastered mud structure encased in glass within the Gurudwara. Every year, a grand celebration is held to commemorate Guru Nanak’s wedding, with a large procession marking the occasion.
